FAN GIRL FRIDAY - ALEXIS THE SHIFT CREATIVE

FAN GIRL FRIDAY - ALEXIS THE SHIFT CREATIVE

Hey Alexis! If we were meeting for the first time, how would you describe what it is you do?

Hi! I am the owner and designer of The Shift Creative - a design and fabrication company that specializes in stage design, experiential activations, and photo backdrops! Basically we are the people behind all of the instagramable moments you see!

How long have you been doing it?

I started my business when my daughter was 6 months old! Shift is now turning 8 which is SO CRAZY!

What inspired you intentionally to start designing these amazing pieces of art?

I really always say that the business started as a fluke. I had no idea what I was doing, I was creative - yes, but I didn’t know I would be creating the designs I do today! My friend encouraged me to start a blog and put up anything I was into at the time. That blog was The Shift Creative!

If you could go back in time, what would be something you’d change from when you were starting out? Or what advice would you give your younger self?

You know, I could sit here and say “flesh out a plan”, “hire a business coach sooner” or other things like that, however, sometimes I think ambiguity gives freedom when it comes to finding out what it is you want to do. You are free to create. To make mistakes, to over charge. To under charge. To learn and grow. It all starts with the first step. And I am still learning. You will never make it - it's a moving target and one we move ourselves.

What were the hardest aspects of starting your own business & how did you overcome them?

The hardest part to starting your business is STARTING. We get frozen with fear, or overwhelmed by all the ideas we have that we fail to start. It's clumsy, messy, and not perfect, but taking that risk often comes with the biggest reward.

How do you keep your creativity alive?

Sometimes I hit creative ruts like anyone else! I love being inspired by floral artists, architecture, graphic design, and color palettes!

What is your favorite part of being a female entrepreneur?

I definitely take pride in being a female entrepreneur. I love empowering and equipping other women in pursuing their own goals. I always hear other women saying they want to grow in their confidence. You aren’t born with confidence - its a mindset that has to constantly be tended too. And the only way to step into confidence is to try the things that you are scared of doing and then being patient with yourself as you get good at it.

What advice do you have for women who are still struggling to find their style/niche?

Don’t get so hung up on your aesthetic right away if you aren’t sure. The only way to find your style and niche is to start creating. I didn’t have a style or niche when I started out! You don’t really start with a style - you develop into one!

On your path to your current business, did you ever come across a moment where you doubted yourself? I think it’s human to sometimes lose all faith in ourselves and our ability to create. What would you tell someone who may be in this spot right now?

Oh all the time! I definitely get imposter syndrome from time to time especially if I have a meeting with someone who is farther ahead than me! It’s important to remember that everyone we compare ourselves too started from the bottom too. Success takes time. It takes failing. It takes a teachable heart and perseverance. Use that feeling of inadequacy to inspire you, rather to derail you.

Who do you look up to?

Jaclyn Johnson, Lori Harder, Amber Lewis, and Sophia Amoruso. All boss ladies!

What is one workshop or conference/expo you’ve attended that inspired you so much, you would attend again?

We work a lot with Create and Cultivate so we will always champion them!

Have you read any books or listened to a podcast you feel would be beneficial for Female Entrepreneurs that you want to share? I mean other then your own Bomb Podcast! lol

I love Jasmine Star’s podcast- always vey motivational and practical! The books I am currently reading are on trauma, which is a great reminder to take care of yourself in the midst of growing a business! So often we work with our head down and we don’t stop and take care of our emotional, mental, and spiritual health! It will catch up with you! Your own healing will help the output you put into your business!

What is your go-to tool of your trade that you couldn’t live without?

CNC machine is a big asset to have to create all the fun shapes and signs you see us design with! We used to use a jig-saw for everything and it can be hard to be precise!

Who is your biggest supporter?

I think my kids are my biggest supporters, especially my daughter Sophia. She says she wants to be “mamma’s intern” and she is genuinely interested in seeing my projects. She also helps us in the warehouse when she can!

What is your MOST favorite project you’ve worked on?
What is one tip you have for women who are struggling to grow on social media?

Put out the content you like. Be silly. Be serious. Provide Education. Dance to a trendy song. Have fun! You will see what your audience gravitates towards and responds too, then adjust accordingly.

What do you feel is the most beneficial tool out there for female entrepreneurs?

Conferences. Go out and meet other women. Relationships are the stepping stone for deeper connection, collaboration, and success in business.

The big money question, how the heck do you balance Business + Motherhood?

Awhile back I heard from church to instead thinking of it as balancing, think of it as blending. Blending responsibilities together. Balancing alludes to the idea of walking a tightrope juggling all of your responsibilities and if you lose your footing- BOOM- it all crashes down. Blending allows for the merging of responsibilities, an overlap as you navigate your day-to-day. This could look like listening to a business podcast while doing the dishes or making your kids lunch. Folding laundry and watching your favorite show. I don’t always blend perfectly, but I do my best!

When it comes to social Media, is it better, in your opinion, to have one account that you share everything or divide personal + biz?

Ugh this is my biggest struggle personally. I have 4 accounts - Shift, personal, a home account and a podcast account. I think that a majority of my followers like me posting personal aspects of my life on the Shift account. I am the face of the brand and I think it also builds relationships. However, I don’t like to be overly personal on my feed. I tend to leave that for stories. I recently chatted with my social media manager and I am officially moving to a personal instagram where I have more freedom posting outfits, family and the like on there. This way it doesn’t confuse my ideal client when they come to my business page. Do what works best for you!
