WITH EMILY METCALF PHOTOGRAPHY
Emily is married to her absolute best friend, she has one gorgeous 5 year old daughter and a 2 year old boy. So she knows first hand how incredibly fast these moments pass us by. As a mother she oftentimes finds herself torn between wanting these babies to move on to the next phase- and wanting to freeze time and keep them right where they are all at the same time. Have you been there, too?! In the moment, when the baby is teething and keeping you up all night long, you can find yourself daydreaming about when they become a toddler and are out of this stage. Then you blink. They are full blown toddlers running around your kitchen getting all the pots and pans out, making a mess no doubt, and you find yourself dreaming about when they were "little" and you could just throw them on your hip and go about your evening routine. You find yourself remembering how it was "back then" and wondering what in the world was so hard. You miss their tiny knuckle dimples, those gummy smiles, and how much they needed their mama. Each and every season of raising children seems to have this exact same feeling of how good it was "back then" in common- whether they are toddlers or teenagers!
"MY ENTIRE PURPOSE IS TO KEEP YOU IN THE MOMENT, AND NOT LET YOU MISS IT."
That's were Emily comes in! Her entire purpose is to keep you in the moment, and not let you miss it. While you are worrying about your little one's hair lying just so, or how flattering your dress is or isn't - She is searching for the bigger picture. She is capturing those moments that help you remember your "back then." Emily hopes that through her images she can show you how wonderful and amazing it is in your life right NOW. These are some of the best days! She is capturing laughter and giggles. Piggyback rides from dad, group hugs, and how you all love one another. She is capturing your JOY.
This same principle applies to couples and seniors as well. Her whole goal is to help you see all these incredible moments in your life, and show you all of the JOY and wonderfulness that this season of life is bringing you. You don't want to forget it or miss it!!!
If we were meeting for the first time, how would you describe what it is you do?
I would say that I am a family and newborn photographer- but I photograph it all!
How long have you been doing it?
I have been a photographer for over 5 years!
What’s your why?
I officially started my business when my daughter was just 5 months old, and I did it to honestly feel like myself again postpartum! I was a full time stay at home mom, and wanted to have a creative outlet that was just for me.
If you could time travel back to when you first started out, what advice would you give yourself? Would you change anything?
What a great question! I don’t think that I would change anything, because I feel like everything happens for a reason- even the mistakes I made lead me here and have a lesson/purpose! I think the advice I would tell myself when I first started would be to trust yourself. Trust that you are smarter/more creative/talented/worth it than you think that you are.
How do you keep your creativity alive?
I photograph my kids! I take them and head to a new location or put them in outfits that I just love- and allow myself to just shoot for me.
What advice do you have for women who are struggling to find their style?
When you’re trying to find your own style, it can be hard to scroll Instagram and see everyone else’s work and compare it to your own! I remember at the beginning I would take a photo and throw it in lightroom, and spend hours just playing with the sliders seeing exactly what each one changed about my image and how I felt about it. I would take notes about what things I liked and didn’t, and then try it again on another photo! No presets- just playing around and learning on my own. I feel like that was SO instrumental in me finding my own style and would be helpful for other women to try! Back to basics!
Have you ever doubted yourself? What would you tell someone who may be doubting themselves right now?
ALL THE TIME. Imposter syndrome is so real. Especially the first couple years of my business I struggled with this way too often. My best advice is to stay in your own lane! Stop looking at what everyone else is doing around you and just do you!
Who do you look up to that you totally wish was your bestie?
This is tough- probably Katelyn James!
Top book/podcast recommendations for female entrepreneurs that you love to share?
Jasmine Star’s podcast is great!
What is your go to tool of your trade that you couldn’t live without?
My 35mm lens! It rarely leaves my camera and love it!!!
Who is your biggest cheerleader?
My husband without a doubt!
What is your favorite project that you’ve worked on / been a part of and why?
Within the last year I launched my new favorite thing ever- family films! These videos have truly captured my heart and ignited this new fire in me! I am so passionate about them and love to create them for my families!
How have you approached shifts in your business?
One step at a time! I try to take things somewhat slow and steady when shifting things, and plan ahead!
What were the hardest aspects of starting your own business & how did you overcome them?
The hustle of just starting! I had a five month old daughter and my husband worked crazy long hours away from home. I was taking care of my little one during the day, and staying up all hours at night to edit, send emails, start my social media pages, build my website, and build this business from the ground up! I just put my head down and did whatever it took- kept my eye on my goals and went for them.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever heard that has stuck with you?
My sweet best friend, Laura (who is also a photographer!) told me that “strong and steady roots build a firm foundation”, and that has always stuck with me. I treat each client like I would a close friend. I get to know them and build relationships with them, and care about them and their children. My business has grown solely on word of mouth and it grew so quickly because of my absolutely incredible clients turned friends!
How do you celebrate wins or finishing big projects?
If I am celebrating a huge win- I am ordering chocolate cheesecake and eating it in bed and watching a good movie with my husband!
Let’s take this back to the beginning, why did you start? What inspired you to take the leap?
I started my business five years ago this August (WOW! Time flies!) and I credit that solely to my amazing husband, Cole. I had always been interested in photography, and in high school started shooting for friends and family. I had even done a couple weddings before officially taking the leap and starting my business. I just didn’t believe in myself enough, or think that I was capable of being a business owner. Cole has always been there cheering me on and encouraging me to chase my dreams!
