FAN GIRL FRIDAY - KATIE WARBY

FAN GIRL FRIDAY - KATIE WARBY

If we were meeting for the first time, how would you describe what it is you do?

I’m a lifestyle photographer who aims to capture the little details of people's stories.. not in a perfectly posed way, but real, raw, and genuine moments!

How long have you been doing it?

I’ve been taking photos for as long as I can remember, but I started my business in 2018.

What’s your why?

This is a good question! It sounds a little selfish, but my why is for me. I create for myself first. It’s so fulfilling and brings joy to my soul! And when there is joy in my soul, everything seems to be better as well. Secondly, I love creating for others. I feel life very deeply, I hope to evoke that same emotion in those I photograph. It's all about connection with myself and others.

If you could time travel back to when you first started out, what advice would you give yourself? Would you change anything?

I would tell myself to enjoy the process. I remember looking at others work and wishing I was where they were in regards to their business, not for clients, but skill! I’ve learned now that there is so much beauty in the exactness of whatever stage you’re in. You’ll get better all in your own time. You’ll learn and grow and figure out that the uphill steps are actually the beautiful parts.

How do you keep your creativity alive?

If I’m being completely honest, one of my biggest motivations to have a business at all is for my own creative reward. Striving to be creative is basically my goal with every shoot. I try to only shoot and share photos that I feel portray myself as an artist, and through doing so I feel I attract those clients who want me for just that, my creativity. That way, I feel I have a lot of opportunities to keep it alive! I also love to gain inspiration from other artists.

What advice do you have for women who are struggling to find their style?

Try it all! Pull the pieces together that resonate with you and make something beautifully your own.

Have you ever doubted yourself? What would you tell someone who may be doubting themselves right now?

Absolutely! Imposter Syndrome is so real. I’ve found that turning inward and looking back at what I’ve accomplished helps me put things back into perspective. Who are you NOT to succeed?! Believe in you and never ever ever never never ever EVER compare your journey or work to anyone else.

Who do you look up to that you totally wish was your bestie?

Do I have to pick just one!? Lucky for me, the people I look up to most ARE my besties in real life. I have an amazingly rare group of sisters that are pure sunshine to my existence. I look to them for mothering advice, business advice… honestly all the advice.

Top book/podcast recommendations for female entrepreneurs that you love to share?

I’ll be totally transparent here, I don’t read a lot of books and I don’t listen to many podcasts, but I’ve been inspired by the work of so many amazing female entrepreneurs. Brianna Wilbur, Renaye Mclachlan, Sami Jo, Lisette Leblanc, to name a few.

What is your go to tool of your trade that you couldn’t live without?

Camera + Lightroom

Who is your biggest cheerleader?

My sweet husband has by far been my biggest cheerleader. He does everything and anything in his power to help make sure this dream of mine is a reality and tells me daily how proud he is of me. He’s a huge part of my success.

What is your favorite project that you’ve worked on/ been a part of and why?

A big pull for me to start my business was a yearning to reach mothers. I wanted to be able to offer shoots exclusively to these amazing women with their children. So, I started a monthly giveaway where I have others enter a mother, who they think can benefit from a shoot like this. I then prayerfully draw a name out of a bowl from my kitchen cupboard. It has been such an amazing experience meeting and interacting with these women month after month. Their stories have told me that it was no accident they were chosen when they were.. I know they have a God who loves and is aware of them, and I feel incredibly honored to be a small part of their stories.

How have you approached shifts in your business?

I try to see them as opportunities to learn something new. The more shifts and turns I experience, the more growth and possibilities that lie ahead.

What were the hardest aspects of starting your own business and how did you overcome them?

I think the hardest aspect was me getting in my own way, questioning myself and if I could do it. Fortunately, I had an amazing friend who really believed in me and pushed me to just start. Having her presence in my life has motivated me to realize my strengths and use them! Once I realized I was just as capable as anyone else, things shifted and it’s made a world of difference.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever heard that stuck with you?

Do what's right, not what's expected.

How do you celebrate wins or finishing big projects?

By diving deep into time with my little family!

Let’s take this back to the beginning, why did you start? What inspired you to take the leap?
It sounds cliché, but I just felt pulled to it. I felt like it was the next step in my life and something I needed to do, for myself, and for the beautiful people I would meet along the way.
